Validate Before You Build: A 4-DIMENSION Go/No-Go Test
The most expensive mistake founders make
Building before validating. It sounds obvious, yet nearly everyone does it. The fix is a simple, repeatable test you can run in an afternoon.
The four dimensions
1. Market fit (0–10) Is there a specific, reachable audience that feels this pain today? Vague audiences ("small businesses") score low. Specific, named groups ("solo CPAs during tax season") score high.
2. Competition (0–10) List the top three alternatives your audience uses today. If you can't name three, you don't know the market. Score higher when you have a clear, defensible wedge.
3. Feasibility (0–10) Can a small team ship a useful version in 2–4 weeks? If the MVP needs months, score low. AI products often look easy and aren't.
4. Monetization (0–10) Will someone pay, and is the price enough to build a real business? $5/mo tools rarely fund teams; $200/mo tools often do.
How to decide
- 32–40: Go. Start the MVP page.
- 24–31: Iterate. Pick the lowest-scoring dimension and fix it.
- Under 24: No-go. Save the months.
Launchidea's validator runs this assessment for you and returns a recommendation with strengths, risks, and next steps.
The takeaway
A four-dimension test turns a gut feeling into a decision. Run it before you build, not after.
